Algae & Seagrass.

Algae and seagrass are collected from the shoreline, often washed up after storms and treated as waste. These coastal materials are processed by hand and explored as regenerative resources for biobased surfaces and textiles.

The focus is on what already exists in the landscape, avoiding the harvesting of living ecosystems. Seagrass, with its fibrous and flexible structure, offers distinct aesthetic and material qualities alongside algae.

Through collection, transformation and reuse, we look at how overlooked natural matter can shape new ways of making.

Why algae & seagrass?

There are many reasons why we should use algae & seagrass more increasingly in our lives. Here are six main reasons to why:

Fastest Growing
Natural Resources

01

Algae grows 10 times faster than land plants, and less than a tenth of the land is needed to produce the same amount of biomass. Seagrass is as a renewable coastal plant that washes ashore as waste, making beach-cast material a valuable, non-invasive source.

Reduce Pollution

02

By farming coastal areas and discharging wastewater into the sea, algae & seagrass can help protect the ocean from pollution. Algae breaks down the CO2, thus counteracting acidification and creating a local habitat with a more neutral. Seagrass helps maintain water quality by trapping sediments and cycling nutrients in coastal ecosystems.

Provide Oxygen

03

Algae & Seagrass produce oxygen as a byproduct of photosynthesis. Algae produces 30 to 50 percent of Earth’s oxygen, which sustains humans and other species that live on land. That’s more than all the tropical rainforests combined.

Regenerative and versatile

Alga is like no other materials out there. Its growing rate is unbeatable. That in combination with its versatility makes it the perfect material. Seagrass offers unique fibrous textures and natural durability, making it a valuable material for design when sourced from beach-cast waste.

Protecting marine life

05

Alga & Seagrass is not only a living environment for marine life but gives also nutrients and shelter.

Protecting our coasts

06

Alga & Seagrass does not only provide living shelter to other marine life, but it also protects our homes. It dampens waves hitting our shores and thereby reduces coast erosions.
